Alternative Dental Care

It should come to no surprise to anyone who reads a word I write, that I am always seeking the most natural and healthy way to live.  A couple of week ago when the headlines splashed across my computer screen of a three year old little girl brain dead after routine root canals, I spilled my coffee. On the key board. And I screamed. Who thinks a three year old needs root canals? At three my kids where still cutting baby teeth. A root canals? Isn’t that very major and oh yes, linked to cancer?

Okay, I know there are children who are allowed to go to bed with a bottle of juice or milk and Mom swears they can’t go to sleep without such.  This leads to that dental mess known as baby bottle mouth.  I hear all the time, “I have poor genes my teeth are just crumbling and so are my child’s.”  Can we do something about that, yes we can.

First of all, never put your child to bed with a bottle of anything unless it’s pure water.

Second I don’t care what your genes are, you can improve the strength of your teeth, as well as naturally head cavities with bone broth.

Third, that commercial toothpaste and fluoride treatment as well as fluoride in the water, it’s not all it’s cracked up to be either.

Alternative_Dental_CareCommercial toothpaste contains toxic properties, and even warns us not to ingest and to call poison control if much is swallowed.  If I product comes with a poison control warning, you can bet I am not bringing it into my house let alone using it in my mouth.  Fluoride you find in water and toothpaste is a neurotoxin.  It’s not a natural mineral, but rather a man made  toxic waste product from phosphate fertilizer plants.  How did we get tricked into thinking it was a miracle product?  Simple, in 1940’s the Department of Public Health noticed a study showing where people drinking local water that contained higher than normal amounts of natural fluoride had less cavities and healthier teeth than people drinking water without high amounts of natural fluoride.  Someone just confused natural occurring fluoride with toxic by product fluoride and that toxic sludge was dumped into our water supply and toted as a health benefit.  Then it became a part of our toothpaste and oh of dental treatments, yet few ask if this was okay, safe, natural. It’s not.

Why does it matter?  When you effect your over all health with a neurotoxin that interferes with your bodies ability to detox as well as use nutrition properly, it effects the health of your bones as well as teeth.

What do we do around here.  Along with brushing and flossing, we drink bone broth everyday and add minerals to our teeth with egg shells.  We also avoid commercial toothpaste for brain and body friendly alternatives. We snack on crunchy foods that naturally clean teeth and strengthen the gums.

Bone Broth:

• 2 pounds (or more) of bones from a healthy source please check to make sure these are organic or not fed chemicals.
• 1 onion
• 2 carrots
• 2 stalks of celery
• 2 tablespoons Apple Cider Vinegar
• Optional: 1 bunch of parsley, 1 tablespoon or more of sea salt, 1 teaspoon peppercorns, additional herbs or spices to taste. I also add 2 cloves of garlic for the last 30 minutes of cooking.

You can save bones from roasted chicken dinner or beef.  If you purchase bones, your will want to roast the beef bones for about 30 minutes in the oven on 350 first.

Place your bones in a large stock pot, I use a five gallon stock pot.  Pour water and vinegar over the bones, let them sit for about 30 minutes.  This will allow the vinegar to break down the bones.  While this is sitting, chop your onion, carrots, and celery including the tops.  Toss all this in the pot add seasoning, and boil.  Once boiling reduce heat to a simmer.  About every 20 minutes or so skim off any foam or other debris that surface.  Allow to cook covered on very low for 24 hours is using chicken, 48 for beef. Remove and let cool.  You now have a healthy base for soups, gravies, for cooking vegetables.  Warm a cup to start off the day or for a mid day pick me up on cold days.  You can scramble and egg stir into warming mixture for a simple egg drop soup.  The minerals in this mix will help strengthen your bones and teeth.

Toothpaste.  There are many recipes on the web for making toothpaste, but have used the same quick blend for years.

Using about half a cup of coconut oil, melted, I blend in baking soda a tablespoon at a time until I get the consistency I want.  Add a few drops of essential oils, peppermint is my favorite, but others like to add thieves oil or a blend of several essential oils.  That’s it, mix in a glass jar and store.  I honestly cannot recall the last time I used commercial toothpaste.  After I dropped it, years of skin issues due to allergic reactions to additive in commercial toothpaste cleared up.  I no longer had dry mouth. My teeth feel cleaner and I have less plaque build up than ever.

My final tip, and when you stop saying gross no, think about it.  Your great grandparents more than likely added egg shells to their coffee grounds every morning when they made coffee.  Did know that?  If you did, do you know why?  The idea was to remove the mineral from the egg shells.  Today we do a similar thing in our house.  I save the egg shells and when I have a dozen or so, boil them for about 5 minutes. This will kill any bacteria.  Strain the shells from the water, let dry.  Place in a coffee grinder or blender and crush into powder.  This can be sprinkled on food, or simply eaten.  The water, save let cool and use to water house plants.  Just make sure your eggs are organic and that the chickens have not been fed any chemicals or hormones, this is something you will want to avoid.
