“Blue Horse with Spots.”
The therapist panics, considering what size meltdown J will unleash when a blue spotted horse…or is it a blue horse with other spots…is not found on the camp premises – much less the universe.
No meltdown occurred…but what did occur was the therapist’s discovery that there is, in fact, a therapy horse that is white… with spots… named “Blue”.
I can’t count the number of times I’ve read or heard someone saying something like, “Oh, he won’t remember anything.” I can’t count the number of times I retorted, “Yes…he will. He’s in there. He knows what’s going on around him. Don’t treat him like he’s not here watching or listening…he is!”
Proof has been coming in droves. Despite the incredible numbers he’s bringing about with the electrical activity in his brain, positive changes show. He repeats scenes from school, having occurred months, even a year prior. He remembers people, places, books, shows and so much more than I could ever know.
This most recent time, a time for us marking the beginning of summer by spending a week at a therapeutic camp for kiddos with special needs…in this most recent time, J proves again, he’s in there.
You just have to listen.
